Here's the part that should get your attention: for most Ohio families, that was the first moment all summer anyone thought about the air inside their house. And by the time you can smell it, you're already breathing it. Wildfire smoke is the rare home-comfort emergency that arrives with no warning, from 800 miles away, and hits the people you'd least want it to hit—kids, grandparents, anyone with asthma or a heart condition.

What Happened Over Ohio This Month—and Why It Will Happen Again
Canada's 2026 fire season has run well ahead of its historical pace. More than 3 million hectares have burned nationwide—an area larger than the state of Vermont—with close to 800 fires active at the peak of the July surge. Ontario has been the hardest-hit province, with nearly 200 fires burning at once, more than 130 of them concentrated in the northwest and dozens listed as out of control.
Northwestern Ontario is the worst possible location for Ohio. The prevailing summer flow carries that smoke southeast, straight down over the Great Lakes and into the Ohio Valley. It rides in above us for a day or two, then a weather pattern presses it down to the surface—and suddenly the haze isn't a pretty orange sunset anymore, it's in your lungs.
And this isn't over. Environment and Climate Change Canada's outlook points to above-average temperatures and continued dry conditions across much of the country—including northwestern Ontario—through August. Translation for Ohio homeowners: plan on more smoke days before this season ends, and treat what happened in July as a rehearsal rather than a fluke.
Why Wildfire Smoke Is More Dangerous Than It Looks
People underestimate smoke because it registers as a smell, and a campfire smell doesn't feel like a threat. But the smell is the least of it. The real hazard is PM2.5—particulate matter 2.5 microns and smaller, roughly one-thirtieth the width of a human hair.

6 Things Your HVAC System Can Do That a Closed Window Can't
This is where a heating and cooling company is actually useful in a smoke event. Your central system already moves the entire volume of air in your house through one place, several times an hour. That makes it the most powerful air-cleaning tool you own—provided what's sitting in that one place is up to the job.
1. Run a MERV 13 filter during smoke season
The cheap fiberglass filter most homes ship with is designed to keep lint off the blower, not to capture PM2.5. The EPA recommends stepping up to MERV 13 or higher during smoky periods, because that's roughly where a residential filter starts capturing a meaningful share of fine smoke particles. Two cautions from the field: don't jump several MERV levels on an older system without checking—a filter too restrictive for your blower and return ducts starves airflow, ices coils, and can shorten equipment life. And plan to swap it every two to four weeks while smoke is heavy, because it will load up far faster than the box says.
2. Switch the thermostat fan from AUTO to ON
Free, instant, and the most underused setting on your wall. On AUTO, the blower only runs while the system is actively cooling—which on a mild smoky day might be a few minutes an hour. On ON, air passes through that filter continuously. EPA guidance notes that a high-efficiency filter running continuously can cut indoor fine-particle levels roughly in half. Flip it back to AUTO once the advisory lifts.
3. Close the fresh-air intake—temporarily
This one catches people. If your home has a fresh-air duct, an ERV or HRV, an economizer, or a ventilating dehumidifier, it is deliberately pulling outdoor air inside—which is exactly right 360 days a year and exactly wrong during a smoke event. Close or pause it for the duration, and set a reminder to reopen it, because a home left in full recirculation for weeks gets stuffy and humid fast. 4. Add whole-home air purification
A filter catches particles that happen to pass through it. Whole-home purification—a media air cleaner, an electronic air cleaner, or a UV system installed at the air handler—treats every cubic foot the system moves, without the airflow penalty of cramming an ultra-high-MERV filter into a slot that wasn't sized for it. 5. Set up a "clean room" with a portable HEPA unit
Even a well-filtered house has weak spots. The strategy public health agencies recommend is simple: pick one room—usually the bedroom where your family sleeps—close the door, and run a true HEPA portable air cleaner sized for that square footage. Whole-home filtration lowers the baseline everywhere; the clean room gives you eight solid hours of the best air in the house. Skip anything that generates ozone: it's a lung irritant, not a purifier.
6. Seal the gaps smoke sneaks through
Smoke and money leave through the same holes. Leaky return ducts in a hot attic or crawlspace pull unfiltered air—and whatever's in it—straight into your supply air, bypassing your filter entirely. What Not to Do When Smoke Settles In
Half of protecting your air is avoiding the moves that make it worse:
- Don't "air the house out." The instinct to throw the windows open when it smells smoky indoors is exactly backwards during an active alert. Wait until AQI drops, then flush the house.
- Don't run the whole-house fan or attic fan. Both pull enormous volumes of outdoor air—and smoke—straight through your living space.
- Don't add indoor smoke. Candles, incense, wood stoves, and gas-stove searing all raise indoor PM2.5 on top of what's already infiltrating. Save the fried chicken for a clear day.
- Don't vacuum without a HEPA-filtered vacuum. A standard vacuum re-suspends settled fine particles instead of removing them. Damp-dust and damp-mop instead.
- Don't ignore an AC that starts struggling. A restrictive filter plus a smoke-fouled outdoor coil is a real combination during these events. Short cycling, weak airflow, or a system running nonstop and not keeping up is worth a call—here's what those warning signs usually mean.
- Don't trust an N95 you keep in a drawer for household chores. Cloth and surgical masks do essentially nothing for PM2.5, and a proper respirator only helps if it seals. Filtration beats masking indoors.
After the Smoke Clears: Reset Your System
When the advisory lifts, there's a short list worth working through—most of it in one afternoon:
- Change the filter, even if it looks fine. Fine particles load a filter long before it looks dirty, and a loaded filter chokes airflow through the rest of summer.
- Rinse the outdoor condenser coil. Smoke, ash, and cottonwood-style debris blanket the fins and force the system to work harder. A gentle rinse with the power off helps; a technician cleaning it properly helps more.
- Reopen your fresh-air intake or ERV. Don't leave the house sealed for the rest of the season—stale, humid air brings its own problems.
- Flush the house on a clear, cool morning. Ten to fifteen minutes of cross-breeze does more than any air freshener.
- Wash what caught the particles. Bedding, curtains, and throw pillows hold onto smoke odor after the air itself is clean.
- If the smell keeps returning when the system kicks on, that's a sign it settled in the coil or the ducts—worth having someone look rather than waiting it out.
